Week 6 Update

Fathers Day Events

Just a reminder that the P&F are running a Fathers Day stall this week on Wednesday and Thursday. A brochure was handed out last week about the types of gifts your child can purchase.

This Friday the School Board will help us celebrate Fathers Day with their annual pancake breakfast. Please book online to help with catering for this event. After the breakfast the MLC students will be running our Fathers Day Worship, which you are invited to attend. It will be at 9 am in the Worship Centre.

Active Travel Day

This terms walk/ride/scoot to school day is Wednesday 4th September, 2019. You could organise a group of friends and get them to walk together. This is a great way for children to burn up some energy.

Christian Studies

This term our focus for learning is about the early church and how events have changed or formed our church and vice versa. We will be looking at Martin Luther and the reason the first Lutheran settlers migrated to Hahndorf as well.

Moon Journals

Thank you for all those parents who have helped their child record the nightly moon observation. We have seen a growth in descriptive language and observational skills. Some students have even used iMovie to take movies tracking the moon over a 12 hour period. For those children who have been interested we have been seeing extra home research about planets, space travel and all amazing facts about space. The new moon is at the end of this week and we’ll be finishing our observations and creative poetry book.

Pen Pals

We have been writing letters to students from Encounter Lutheran School, Victor Harbor. We were lucky to meet with them on Monday. This was great experience for the children. We were very impressed with their communication skills and ability to show their pen pals around our school.

Many blessings,

MLC teachers

Term 3 Week 4

Hi All,

This week is Science Week and we acknowledge the 50 years since man first landed on the moon. We have moon activities for the children to complete this week. On Wednesday, we will have Guess the Scientist Day. Adults will dress up as famous scientists who have made a difference to space exploration or made space discoveries. The children will have a game sheet to determine their identity.

Year 4’s Cornerstone Science visits

The year 4’s will be participating in some science activities at Cornerstone College on Friday. A note and consent form has been sent home and we apologise for the short notice. We will be joined by Year 4s from other Lutheran schools in the area to  conduct STEM investigations.  Please return your child’s consent form by Thursday 15th August, 2019.

The Year 5s will remain at school for solar system activities.

Uniform

We have noticed that many children are wearing the incorrect uniform such as sports socks or sports shoes with formal uniform.  Please refer to our uniform policy on the website if you have any questions. A reminder that Mrs Hall’s and Mrs Kruger’s classes wear sport uniform on Tuesday and Friday. Mr Pfeiffer’s class wears sport uniform on Wednesday and Friday. In addition, there are quite a few  jumpers and sports tops in our lost property box. Please make sure your child’s uniforms are clearly named, especially second hand uniforms so we can promptly return your child’s clothing when found.

Book Week

Next week is Book Week! Our Book Week Parade will be held on Monday 19 August.  The theme is ‘Reading is my Secret Power.” Your child may choose to dress in their concert costume (if you’re lucky!).

Migration Museum and SA Museum

Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped us last Thursday. We were pushed for time when visiting these places and these would be great places to visit in the holidays as there is so much to explore. We continue to inquire into the lives and perspectives of the early settlers and our indigenous people.  Students have been informed about our new Home Learning topics that are based on this inquiry.

English

Hopefully by now you have heard from your child about our Moon Journals that we are using to inspire us to create our own poetry. Each night we ask the children to complete a small entry in what the moon looks like and uses their senses to describe the night. In class we are then using these descriptive notes to create poetry to be displayed with art work we have designed. Through this activity, we also learn about the cycle of the moon.

Math

We have just completed three weeks on time and now move into mass, capacity and volume. This is a great topic to explore with word problems using all four operations to solve. We encourage the students to complete tasks on Manga High around addition, subtraction and multiplication.

Term 3 Week 2 Update

Concert
A big thank you to all the parents who supported their child with the learning of the lines, organizing a costume and encouraging them when they were nervous. It was a great concert and we saw much growth in their performance skills. We have a photo display in the front office that you are welcome to have a look at.

Moon Journals
This week we have started our Moon Journals. This a writing and art project that we will be working on  for the next couple of weeks. We will be asking the children to jot down some observations about the moon each night. They might like to sketch what they see, describe the weather, find stories or fables or even locate facts about the moon. We will be using our journal notes to create our own poetry or little stories. We ask you to encourage your child to complete this task every night. It should only take a few moments to do.

Book Fair
The annual Book Fair will be held at school next week. Please click on the link for more information.

Excursion
Next week (Thursday 8th August) we will be on an excursion to Adelaide. Please make sure your child’s consent form is returned by Monday. A blog post will be up next week with the final details.

Tissues
We have had a few runny noses lately and our tissue supplies are low, if you could provide a box of tissues to help us out it would be much appreciated.

Have a great weekend
