Week 5 – Update

Bike Ed

Next week we will be riding around the local streets, so all children who don’t have water bottle holder will need to bring a small backpack to carry with them. All children who have a medical concern e.g. Ventolin puffers, Epi-pens will also need to carry these in their own backpack.

Spelling App

Last year we used an online program that children could access their weekly word list and sound list. This app has been bought out by a new company. If you could please download the following app it would be greatly appreciated.

Students will need the Kids A-Z app on their ipad – https://apps.apple.com/au/app/kids-a-z/id474207297

Week 4 Update

Class Carers

A big thank you to our parent volunteers who are 2021 MLC class carers-Tanya Randell

Chelsea Klein, Sarah Luke.  We appreciate the time you’re giving to support the families in our community.

Bike Safety

We continue with our Bike Safety lesson for the next 4 weeks. The Bike Ed instructors have been very impressed with the knowledge and skill our students have displayed. It would be great to see families get out on the weekend and check out some of the great bike tracks available in the Adelaide Hills. If you do, take a photo and send it to us we would love to see your adventures. Don’t forget to ask your child some of the safety rules they have learnt about helmets and road safety.

KidBiz

This week students have attended a session during class time to help cover the Health curriculum. All workshops cover core social, personal and sexuality development education and are mapped to the Australian Curriculum: Health & Physical Education and the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum.

The content of the Year 5 sessions include:

The Reproductive System

  • Familiarise students with names, positions, and functions of the male and female reproductive system

Basic Puberty: Physical and Emotional

  • Informs students of physical changes associated with puberty for both females and males e.g. breasts grow, voices break, pimples, body odour
  • Informs students of the emotional changes associated with puberty for both females and males e.g. mood swings, hormone levels
  • Encourages students to feel comfortable about the changes happening to them and an acceptance of individual variation

Keep Safe: Cyber Safety

  • Identify skills required for personal safety
  • Social and family responsibilities and minimising risks associated with social media and internet use and cyber bullying

The Year 4s have only one session which covers an introduction to:

  • Correct names and function of parts of the male and female reproductive system
  • Role of the egg and sperm
  • Basic conception and birth
  • Preparing them for puberty both physical, social and emotional changes

The following link has a range of recommended reading specific for girls, boys and parents. It is worth having a look to support your child (and yourself) through this stage.

These sessions are part of the required curriculum for our students and provide basic information. We encourage families to engage in the conversation further at home, in case your child has questions which they are not comfortable asking at school.

On-Line Learning

As discussed at our Parent Information Night we sent home a blue folder containing an exercise book, paper, pencils and pens. This needs to be stored somewhere safe in case of a Covid lockdown (let us pray we don’t have one). Children have been taught to use SeeSaw to access work and learning activities. If you are unable to access SeeSaw Family version, please contact your classroom teacher.

Healthy Snack Time

Please make sure that you pack healthy snacks that are either fruit or vegetables (raw). We have included a handout for your information.  2014CrunchnSip-Parent-brochure

Uniform

As stated in the newsletter we have been focusing on correct school uniform. Please contact us if your child is wearing incorrect uniform so we are aware of issues arising with their uniform.

Medical Forms

Just a reminder that forms were handed out last week from the office. Please return these as soon as possible so we can update our school database.

Curriculum Update

Christian Studies – Under the theme of Christian Belief, our focus is on the Triune God and the relationship and roles of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. We be studying the Christian Creeds- Apostles and Nicene. Throughout the year students will be taught how to locate bible passages in the Bible.

Math – We have started the year by looking at number patterns as this first step in to learning our times tables. We encourage you to help your child learn their times tables. (3,4,6,7,8, & 9) This will be ongoing unit throughout the whole year. Next week we will be breaking into math groups for Fractions. You can support your child by using fractions at home when cooking.

Spelling – The year begins with a revision of common vowel digraphs. During the week we complete activities in class that help increase spelling awareness, revise rules and increase vocabulary with the use of synonyms and antonyms.

Who We Are- This terms inquiry unit (UOI) is based on the Health strand found in the Australian curriculum. Student will be identifying changes in themselves and how they manage changes when dealing with challenges in their lives. We will be identifying what emotional, social, physical and spiritual health means. We continue to look at cybersafety and making good safe choices. A good website you and your child might like to look at together is the government run Kids Help Line – www.kidshelpline.
