Term 1 Week 3

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much to the parents who were able to join us last night at the Parent Information Night. If you were unable to make it, the information booklet and parent feedback form will be sent home tonight. The students also brought home the school ICT agreement last night. Please read and discuss it with your child then sign and return the second page.

Today we were discussing CyberSafety in class. We will be focusing on not sharing personal information including online profiles and what to do if there is unwanted online contact. The following website may help you if you wish to explore this topic further with your child.   Some of the content is geared toward 11-14 year olds but some may be relevant in regards to gaming. http://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent

BikeEd

BikeEd lessons resume tomorrow. Please remember to bring bikes and helmets to school each Wednesday for the next five weeks. There are some bikes available to borrow each week.

Home Learning Options

We’ve posted Home Learning Options in the Home Learning Options page. We plan to update these suggestions each fortnight. Your child will also receive it via their school email.

Author Visit

We will be hosting Scottish author, Stuart Reid on Thursday, 21st February 2019. Stuart’s first book Gorgeous George and the Giant Geriatric Generator won the
Silver Medal at the Forward National Literature Awards. Gorgeous George and the Unidentified Unsinkable Underpants was written to inspire children to read for pleasure, and Stuart’s latest book Gorgeous George and his Timewarp Trouser Trumpets was launched at the Edinburgh Festival.

Pupils can purchase books on the day, all signed by the author, with a personal dedication to each child. Books are available for $14 each, any two for $25 or all three for a special offer price of $30. Parents are welcome to attend the whole group session at 9:45 am on 21 February in the Hub.

KidBiz

We will begin our Kidz Biz sessions in the coming weeks. Year 5s will begin February 25th for two sessions and Year 4s have one session on March 18th.

All workshops cover core social, personal and sexuality development education and are mapped to the Australian Curriculum: Health & Physical Education and the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum. They also work well as an introduction to school-based programs in Pastoral Care and Personal Development.

The content of the Year 5 sessions include:

The Reproductive System

  • Familiarise students with names, positions, and functions of the male and female reproductive system

Basic Puberty: Physical and Emotional

  • Informs students of physical changes associated with puberty for both females and males e.g. breasts grow, voices break, pimples, body odour
  • Informs students of the emotional changes associated with puberty for both females and males e.g. mood swings, hormone levels
  • Encourages students to feel comfortable about the changes happening to them and an acceptance of individual variation

Keep Safe: Cyber Safety

  • Identify skills required for personal safety
  • Social and family responsibilities and minimising risks associated with social media and internet use and cyber bullying

The Year 4s have only one session which covers an introduction to:

  • Correct names and function of parts of the male and female reproductive system
  • Role of the egg and sperm
  • Basic conception and birth
  • Preparing them for puberty both physical, social and emotional changes

The following link has a range of recommended reading specific for girls, boys and parents. It is worth having a look to support your child (and yourself) through this stage.

These sessions are part of the required curriculum for our students and provide basic information. We encourage families to engage in the conversation further at home, in case your child has questions which they are not comfortable asking at school.

Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14

We hope the year has had a smooth transition for all of our families. Hope to see you at the Back to School Bash this Friday, 15 February from 4-7 PM. Please contact the classroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Blessings,

MLC teachers
